Vietnam beat Indonesia 6-5 in a penalty shootout at the 2023 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U23 Championship held in Thailand on Saturday to defend their championship title. Indonesia threatened Vietnam in the 25th minute, when Rifky Dwi Septiawan took a free kick from a distance of nearly 24 meters. In the 67th minute, Quoc Viet had another opportunity inside the box, but he once again failed to deliver. The match was eventually decided on penalties, with Vietnam winning 6-5 to maintain their reigning in youth football in Southeast Asia. Hosts Thailand bagged the bronze medal at the AFF U23 Championship after defeating Malaysia 4-3 in a penalty shootout on the same day.
