As the number of thefts in Soc Trang Province, southern Vietnam continues to rise, the provincial administration is requiring that enhanced measures be taken to prevent and fight the crime. Lau explained that residents are hesitant to report thefts and investigations into cases that are reported tend to produce substandard results. Lau attributed the situation to residents’ recklessness in asset management and districts’ poor implementation of criminal prevention and fighting programs. Moreover, departments, agencies, districts, and police seem to be cooperating poorly as many believe fighting crime is the sole responsibility of police officers, he claimed. The provincial police force should regularly warn of thieves’ tricks, provide locals with prevention measures, investigate thefts, and impose sanctions on thieves.
