Vietnam’s lawmaking National Assembly has elected Vo Van Thuong, a standing member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat, as the country’s new state president for the 2021-26 tenure. Thuong has been a member of the all-powerful Politburo since January 2016 and a member of the Party Central Committee since January 2011. He was deputy secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee from April 2014 to February 2016.
