The Vietnam-U.S. relations have thrived strongly thanks to the two nations’ efforts in connection and cooperation over the past many years. A day later, late Vietnamese Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet declared the establishment of diplomatic ties with the United States. After four years of negotiations, late Trade Minister Vu Khoan and former U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky signed a bilateral trade pact in Washington on July 13, 2000. Former Vietnamese State President Nguyen Minh Triet visited the United States on June 18, 2007. President Obama on May 23, 2016 paid an official visit to Vietnam, helping strengthen the Vietnam-U.S. relations.
